September is Hunger Action Month

September is Hunger Action Month

Feeding South Dakota is showing Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on
Sunday, September 29th as part of this national movement.
1:30 PM All AGES WELCOME

The event will feature a PSA created by Feeding America that connects the movie Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to the REAL issue of hunger. In South Dakota, 1 in every 8 individuals suffer from food insecurity, meaning they lack access to food on a regular basis. Even more staggering is 1 in every 5 children in South Dakota are at risk of going hungry.
This free movie event will provide an opportunity for the community to learn about the issue of hunger in a fun, family setting. The Orpheum Theatre is located downtown (315 N Phillips Ave).

Bring a Can to Take a Ride!
Scheels will give a token for their Ferris Wheel (opening May 2014) to anyone who donates a canned food item at the movie.

Good Readers Ask Questions

This week we have become excellent questioners.  We know that a good reader asks questions about text before, during, and after reading.  We practiced questioning by reading The Lotus Seed and Fly Away Home, both stories of hope.

Please pick one After question from either book and answer the question in the comment section.

In Fly Away Home, what does the bird represent in the story?
or
In The Lotus Seed, why does the seed mean so much to the grandmother?

All About You Project

304 has begun their first read aloud called Judy Moody was in a Mood, not a Good Mood, a Bad Mood. It chronicles Judy's third grade adventures.

When Judy Moody’s teacher, Mr. Todd, assigns a project he calls a “Me collage,” Judy thinks it sounds fun (although she won't say so). Mr. Todd tells his students to make a collage that is “all about YOU.” He says to “draw or cut out pictures or paste things to your collage that tell the class what makes you YOU.”

Think for a while about what makes you YOU. Then, start gathering materials to create your own Me collage.

Use ideas from Mr. Todd’s list—and any other categories you can think of! Paste your collage to a big piece of poster board or construction paper. This project is due by the end of September, but you can bring it to class whenever you are finished. I can't wait to learn all about YOU!

Mr. Todd's idea list
my family • my favorite pet
my favorite food • my best friend • clubs I belong to
hobbies • the worst thing that ever happened to me • the funniest thing that ever happened to me

Good Luck!
